Q1. Can I apply to sit any of the examinations or do I have to start with the preliminary examination?
A: Candidates can apply to sit any examination at any level, however, they should take care not to apply for examinations that are scheduled to take place at the same time.

A: Candidates are responsible for making their own arrangements for study.

Q8. When will I receive confirmation of the examination and the examination centre?
A: Confirmation letters including information on the allocated examination centre and the general instructions to candidates will be posted to Members some 4 weeks before the examination.
 
Q9. How do I change my preferred examination centre?
A: The Branch cannot guarantee to allocate candidates to their preferred centre. Nevertheless if you wish to change the preferred centre that you included on your application form you must let the Branch Examination Secretary know in writing (letter, fax or email) no later than 15 January in the exam year.
 
Q10. Can I defer my examination to the following year?
A: Candidates may defer their examination once the following policy has been adhered to:
 
The Institution of Fire Engineers examination deferral policy
  • All fees are non refundable.
  • To sit the examinations the candidate must be a fully paid up member.
  • Deferral requests must be in writing (Letter/fax/email)
  • Candidates can defer for one year only.
Q11. When will I receive my examination result/certificate?
A: Results letters will be posted to all candidates approximately 3 months following the examinations (mid June). Pass certificates will be issued shortly thereafter. Results will not be given out over the telephone or by fax or email.
 
The examination pass list will be published on this website towards the end of June.
 
Q12. I have passed the Intermediate Exam, can I apply for Technician Grade?
A: The Intermediate Examination fulfils the academic part of the requirement for Technician grade of membership.
 
Q13. I have four Member Exam passes (including the compulsory papers), can I apply for Member grade?
A: Four required passes at Member level if achieved within a five year period fulfil the academic part of the requirement for Member grade of membership.
 
Q14. I have four Graduate Exam passes (including the compulsory papers), can I apply for Graduate grade?
A: Four required passes at Graduate level if achieved within a five year period fulfil the academic part of the requirement for Graduate grade of membership.
